" This was an enlightening book on how a young woman reached her dreams. Dreams come to fruition with drive and determination. Lynne is such a great inspiration to the young women at our high school. We have the book on display in our Alumni Room. Yes, she is one of our own. We often see our young women sitting together talking about it. We know Lynne is inspiring them to dream big. "

Full disclosure: I was the editor of this book and it was a treat! All books are not the same when you take them on to edit them. I always do so with my fingers crossed because I know I’ll be living with the book for months: “Please let me love it.” Well, I got my wish. HIGH YELLOW is a delight from the gate, and the author is equally delightful to work with. So, as a reader, you should know that you are reading the memoir of a really nice person, someone you’d like a lot in real life.
So Creatives! Read this book! You know who you are. If you want encouragement that it’s worth it to stay the course and keep chasing after your passion, whatever it may be, this is the book for you. It opens with author/filmmaker Lynne Newton’s basic philosophy: “Never stop following your dream even if it takes your whole life.”
Born and raised in Kansas City, the author relates what formed her with humor and transparency, from being harassed in High School for being light-skinned (“high yellow”), to meeting her father for the first time as an adult, to being the first in her family to graduate college, to ignoring all cautions and driving herself straight to Hollywood where she plunged right in, facing a whole new set of “high yellow” challenges, to auditioning, dating, and even getting mugged Hollywood-style. She pulls out of a few low points to become a multi (over 50) award-winning movie maker!
Even the physical experience of reading “High Yellow” is a treat – its unique square shape that stays open, its smooth paper, and its colorful photos and illustrations, poems, and family recipes. It’s fun to flip through the book and stop to read sections and photo album captions. You end up feeling you are another member of the author’s huge extended and supportive family.
The author’s humor is a thread that runs through the book, including a sub-theme she calls “My War with Birds” that always seem to tweet and chirp outside her window in the early morning, waking her up way before she’s ready. Overall, a great editing experience which is bound to make a great reading experience.
